VOX Cape Town
In 2015, I founded a choral group called VOX Cape Town. My vision for the ensemble is to enrich the musical life of Cape Town by creating imaginative, immersive choral experiences for our singers and audiences. VOX is arguably the most active and versatile choral collective in the Mother City and some of our most successful initiatives have been our choral presentations 'In The Dark' at the Youngblood Gallery and 'ViniChoral', our wine-and-music pairing at Groot Constantia.
Other important aims of VOX Cape Town are:
'New Soundscapes'
VOX's signature performances are the immersive, multisensory experiences we have entitled 'New Soundscapes' – our series intended to expose Cape Town's audiences to fresh choral sounds. The first of these concerts featured music by two composers sharing the same name – John Tave(r)ner – while the second, Trust the Silences and its sequel Trust the Silences (Once More), comprised choral music written within the last three decades. Northern Lights: A Baltic Voyage took listeners on a musical journey of light and sound in its presentation of contemporary composers from Northern and Eastern Europe. Our fourth chapter, Eternal Echoes, took listeners on a musical odyssey through the rich sonorities and textures of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and others – while the fifth, Timeless Whispers, returned us to our origins in the rugged landscapes of the South African Karoo.
Sustainability
Outreach and community involvement are also important aspects of VOX Cape Town’s social vision. VOX is a registered non-profit organisation (197-784 NPO) with approved public benefit organisation (PBO) fiscal status. This ensures that we are accountable to our members and demonstrates our commitment to the long-term future and sustainability of the group and the promotion of choral music in Cape Town.
Virtual VOX
As a result of the Covid-19 national lockdown in 2020, we embarked on a series of virtual choir projects called Virtual VOX. The first of these, released to coincide with Freedom Day (27 April 2020), was featured in an article by UCT News. A further five virtual projects were recorded over the course of the following year, allowing us to stay connected with our musical community.
A full list of performances and recordings is available on VOX Cape Town's website, www.voxcapetown.com.
Other important aims of VOX Cape Town are:
- To inspire audiences and to develop a renewed appreciation for choral music by performing seldom-heard repertoire in unconventional spaces and presenting it in fresh ways;
- To support local composers by commissioning, performing and recording new music;
- To develop our singers’ musicianship by exposing them to a smorgasbord of choral music, both a cappella and accompanied, and by hosting workshops with vocal and performance specialists;
- To promote choral music at home and abroad by setting down and disseminating new recordings, facilitated by relationships with community radio station Fine Music Radio and local record label CapeTown Sound.
