Talk: Alexander Borodin (1833-1887): The only chemist-composer
U3A Overberg (10h00)
Although he is considered one of the outstanding Russian composers of the 19th century, Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) left only a very small volume of musical work. He is best known for his symphonies, his two string quartets and his opera, Prince Igor. He was a member of the group of composers called The Five, who were dedicated to producing a specifically Russian kind of music. But the reason for Borodin's small output is that he considered himself a "Sunday composer", writing music for fun and only in his rare spare time or when he was ill. Chemistry was avowedly his first passion, and today Borodin is the most successful (and indeed, the only) chemist-composer the world has yet seen.

"The Colour of Music", a special edition of Collage
Fine Music Radio (20h00-22h00)
For most of us, listening to music is an exclusively aural experience. But some might "see" a certain key as a colour or associate flavours with the timbres of different instruments. This "mingling of the senses" or synaesthesia would lead musicians such as Franz Liszt to baffle orchestras with requests such as, "Gentlemen, a little bluer, if you please – this tone requires it!" When she was young, Amy Beach would ask her mother to play "the purple music" or "the green music". In the last century it was deemed enormously fashionable to have synaesthesia, but Sibelius hid his in order to avoid being mocked by his colleagues. This special episode of Collage will explore how their unusual way of hearing the world would influence the music-making of these composers and others, as well as contemporary synaesthetes such Leonard Bernstein and Itzhak Perlman.

Talk: There and (nearly) back again: Adapting from live performances to lockdown projects, and vice versa, with VOX Cape Town
U3A Overberg (10h00)
VOX Cape Town was founded five-and-a-half years ago to create mesmerising, imaginative choral experiences to enrich the musical life of the Mother City. Since then, VOX has presented scores of immersive performances in venues ranging from the intimacy of the Tasting Cellar at Groot Constantia to the breathtaking grandeur of the Norval Foundation. Its repertoire spans half a millennium, juxtaposing the classical and the contemporary. However, the national lockdown last March shifted the focus away from live performances and compelled VOX's members to find fresh ways of connecting with one another and their community. This multimedia presentation will illustrate how VOX has had to adapt its vision from an outgoing choral group to a stay-at-home ensemble, whilst continuing to provide meaningful musical experiences for its singers and supporters.
